Mineral water flows from taps in Dzhankoy?
Problems with water are especially felt in the Dzhankoy region. The main water source here is artesian wells. But this water is not recommended for frequent consumption. It has a high salt content.
High water salinity is typical in the northern Crimean region. It normally has high concentrations of chlorides, sulphates and nitrates that exceed recommended maximum concentration limits. The water also has significant concentrations of calcium and magnesium. Water hardness often exceeds hygienic regulations by 1.5-4 times. Water salinity if especially high in wells in the villages of Istochnoe, Lobanovo, Zhilino, Yarkoe Polle, Maryino, Pavlovka, Vol'noe.
Basket case of water-pipes which transfer water is a serious problem too. Basket case consists 70-100%.
Another problem connected with superficial water is that the water table in the region has fallen by 8-15 m lately. As a result water pumps are unable aren't working.
The most serious problem is frequent flooding. Even in hot dry weather cellars in some villages are swimming with water. This problem is compounded by the fact that the government service which controlled and checked the drainage systems has been reduced and cutback to a bare minimum. Because of this, the situation is now backtrace only time to time.
As we can see, there is a lot of work to be done. Currently, members of the Dzhankoj branch of "Ekologiya I Mir" together with "water volunteers" are conducting research on the artesian wells with high water mineralization in ten villages of the region. Gradually ecologists together with specialists will design a program of measures to improve the drinking water quality for Northern Crimea inhabitants. We hope this program will help to protect health of Crimean inhabitants.
